IIT Bombay was established in the year
1958 at Powai, Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra with an objective to develop
facilities for studies in a variety of specialized engineering and
technological sciences. It was the second of IITs instituted; it received
equipments and technical assistance from UNESCO.
Today, IIT Bombay continues to supply quality professionals and research
fellows for the advancement of science and technology globally in a number of
ways. It has developed top class engineers and scientists, and alumni of IIT
Bombay are reaping success in various capacities as entrepreneurs, managers,
technocrats, consultants and advisers, and as faculty members and researchers,
in India and abroad.
Engineering Departments in IITB are Aerospace Engineering, Chemical
Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical
Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical

Innovation and Entrepreneurship in IITB is promoted through its umbrella
organization called SINE (Soceity for Innovation and Entrepreneurship). The
students activity centre caters to the various cultural and extracurricular
activities. The annual festivals hosted by IITB like Techfest (science &
technology fest), Mood Indigo (Cultural and Arts fest) are considered to be the
biggest of its kind in Asia. Sports and recreation facilities in the campus
include Tennis, Sqaush, Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Hockey, Swimming,
Dramatics etc
The official Alumni association of IITB has played key roles in improving the
network and contacts between the alumnus; Kanwal Rekhi school of Information
Technology and S.J.Mehta School of Management were funded by the Alumni
association. Nandan Nilekani (CO-chairman, Infosys), Arun Netravali
(Technologist), Jairam Ramesh (Member of Parliament), Kanwal Rekhi (business
man) are some of the famous Alumni of IITB.
