Read what you like to build a habit and then read topics which you would usually not read. Try to focus on understanding while you read. Don't worry about speed at the moment.
hocab5a443 : HOW TO INCREASE ATTENTION SPAN WHILE READING PARAGRAPHS AND HOW TO REMEMBER KEY POINTS IN IT? amitpoddar : If you find difficulty in remembering the key points, pls use a rough sheet and note down the important points para wise in a very crisp manner. This will help you locate the hints while doing the questions.

manu : GOOD EVENING SIR/MAM I HAVE QUESTION ON VARC SECTION ACTUALLY I AM NOT GETTING GOOD SCORE IN VERBAL ABILITY SIR PLEASE HELP ME HOW TO IMPROVE IT. amitpoddar : For VARC one should start from the handouts and SM booklets.Apart from this , read newspapers and online articles from different resources available-SHP,aeon essays,magportal.com,etc.Also, note down the meanings of difficult words and jargons.Devote 2-3 hrs daily on VARC,if this is your weakest area.
mucab54192 : HI SIR/MA'AM, I HAVE STARTED PREPARING FOR CAT FULL TIME SINCE LAST WEEK, HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR RC AND VERBAL? I HAVE BEEN READING NEWS PAPER FOR 30 MINUTES EVERY DAY, SINCE LAST WEEK. WHAT ADDITIONAL READING EXERCISES I COULD DO? PLEASE SUGGEST MATERIALS, SOURCES AND STRATEGY FOR THE SAME. THANK YOU. gayathri : Read passages on variety of subjects from sources like aeon.com, Art and Letters, National Geographic , BBC etc. Stick to the study material and other resources provided by T.I.M.E.
pncn5q008 : I GIVE SO MUCH TIME TO READ RC AND UNDERSTAND YET THEIR ARE SOME DIFFICULT WORDS WHICH I DON'T UNDERSTAND THEIR MEANING. THAT'S WHY IT BECAME MUCH MORE DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND THE PASSAGE. THEN WHAT TO DO TO GET THAT DIFFICULT WORDS MEANING EASILY. aniketkarane : If you feel you are giving ample time to read and yet the vocab is not developing then revising the words that you encountered in a week should help. note them down in a book and use it to revise. Use Roots and association techniques for figuring out the meaning of the word.
bhca5a109 : HOW CAN I FIND THE STARTING SENTENCE IN PARA JUMBLES EASILY? gayathri : The first sentence opens the para. It generally introduces the what, who, where etc. It introduces the topic of discussion. It can also be a general statement to which more specific details are added using the following statements.
manu : SIR /MAM IAM NOT DOING WELL IN SUMMARIES, PARAJUMBLES, ODD ONE OUT ,FILLINGS GIVE ME SOME TIPS TO IMPROVE IT. aniketkarane : For summaries: Find the summary that is covering all main points in the paragraph but is presented in a succinct manner. For Parajumbles: Try to identify the first sentence which is often general in nature. Try to look for pairs that are obvious and work around it to make a logical & coherent order. For Out of context: Identify the main theme. Then make pairs and find one sentence that is not part of the main theme. For Sentence Filling: Read the sentence that needs to be filled. Then Read the para with the blanks try to figure out where the sentence can be placed and idea flow is not hampered.
cccab5a101 : HI, HOW TO ATTEND THE VARC AS A WHOLE SHOULD I ATTEND RC'S FIRST OR VA FIRST OR TAKE OUT 24 QUESTIONS FROM RC AND TRY TO ATTEND THE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS FIRST IT WOULD BE NICE IF GET A CLEAR PICTURE HOW TO PROCEED WITH THE EXAMINATION BEFORE NEXT AIMCAT aniketkarane : Ideally a good strategy is to figure out if you are good at RC or VA. If your strength is VA then attempt it first if RC is your strength then attempt it first. Solve 10-12 questions of RC and 5-6 questions of VA should be sufficient to score well at the CAT or AIMCAT. In RC check if there are Direct questions and try to solve those first.
rahul_helius : HOW MUCH DO THE UNCONTROLLABLES I.E. MARKS OF 10TH/12TH/GRADUATION AFFECT THE FINAL SELECTION AND WHAT SHALL SOMEONE WHO HAS NOT EXCELLED IN THOSE AREAS DO? amitpoddar : It can vary from college to college but the maximum weightage is given to the CAT scores. So,pls work on improving your percentile.

animesh : HEY, I AM FACING PROBLEM IN MAINTAINING SPEED IN ALL THREE SECTIONS HOW CAN I GO ABOUT THIS IN MY PREPARATION? amitpoddar : You may need to take a lot of sectional tests to improve your speed.

apoorv : I WANT TO GET FASTER AT UNDERSTANDING THE QUESTIONS FASTER AND EASIER WHILE IM DOING TIME SPEED DISTANCE AND WORK. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW I CAN IMPROVE. I WANT TO GET BETTER AT IT AND WANT TO PRACTICE SOME DRILLS TO GET COMFORTABLE TOO. abhishek : Good. Just continue with your practice. You will be okay in some time.
harsh : HELLO, WHAT IS THE AVERAGE WORD COUNT IN CAT RCS AND WHAT SHOULD BE OUR IDEAL SPEED? lakshmymenon : CAT RC passages are about 500 words long. Reading speed should be 200-250 wpm.
pncn5q008 : HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD WE ALLOT FOR EACH RC IN AIMCAT. MEANS THEIR ARE 4 PASSAGES THEN HOW TIME SHOULD WE ALLOT FOR EACH PARA AND HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD WE GIVE TO ATTEMPT QUESTIONS ? AND HOW TIME SHOULD WE ALLOT FOR FOR VERBAL ABILITY QUESTION lakshmymenon : Ideally, 8-10 mins per passage out of which you spend 2-2.5 mins on the initial reading and the remaining time for answering questions. About 10-12 mins for VA. Remember that question selection is important. You should not try to attempt all questions blindly - it will not only affect your accuracy but also mess up your time management.
bhca5a109 : QUANTS IS MY WEAKEST SECTION...APART FROM SOLVING EVERYDAY, WHAT ELSE CAN I DO? abhishek : Answered already. 1. Attend all the classes. 2. Solve the basic material given. 3. bhca5a109 : IN ODD ONE OUT QUESTIONS IS THE ODD ONE OUT ALWAYS FROM A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TOPIC OR NO? amitpoddar : No,it is not from a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TOPIC. Pls follow the instructions which state that form a paragraph from the four sentences and the one which doesn't fit the scheme of the para should be the odd one out.So, you will have to look for the mandatory pairs,Intro and conclusion to solve these kind of questions in most cases.
harsh : DOES CAT ASK DIRECT QUESTIONS ON GRAMMAR ? IF YES, ON AVG HOW MANY QUESTIONS AS ASKED IN EVERY PAPER? IF NOT DIRECTLY ASKED HOW ARE THE QUESTIONS PUT? gayathri : No direct grammar questions are asked in CAT. However it helps in better comprehension of passages and verbal ability questions.
pncn5q008 : GIVE SOME TIPS TO IMPROVE MY LRDI SECTION aniketkarane : Get your basics in place and solve a variety of different sets. Solve previous year papers. Try to reduce your solving time as you go. Also content is key in Lrdi. The more diverse and tough questions you solve the better you will get at it. Start by using the material provided by TIME.
harsh : I HAVE RECENTLY JOINED, IS THERE ANY ARRANGEMENT WHERE STUDENTS CAN INTERACT AND DISCUSS abhishek : Yes. Please check with your centre head. You may interact with the faculty to clarify doubts.
laks : HI, I AM JUST IN A LEARNING STAGE ONLY, AND ALSO MY ENGLISH COMMUNICATION SKILL IS NOT GOOD AT ALL, SO IF ANY DOUBTS IN CLASS AM JUST HESITATE TO ASK BECAUSE OF NOT KNOWING ENGLISH SO FLUENTLY, WHAT CAN I DO SIR ? aniketkarane : Never be afraid to ask doubts all the faculty members are there to help you achieve success. If you can't ask in the class approach the faculty either before or after the class for the same. Ask your center of admission for doubt session where you can ask your doubts without fear.
mitusha : VARC PREPARATION KAISE KARE aniketkarane : For Verbal ability the most important aspect is reading. Start reading for 1 hour atleast every day. apart from reading solve 1-3 RCs every day as RC has 16 questions at the CAT. for VA solve Parajumbles, Parasummary, Out of context, & Fill in the sentence 10 questions each every alternate day

drcab5a159 : HOW TO IMPROVE VOCABULARY aniketkarane : For improving vocabulary 1. Read diverse content daily. 2. Revise the words that you encounter while reading. Note the words in a book separately. 3. Use roots and word association techniques for improving.
bhca5a109 : FOR VARC AFTER SOLVING HANDOUT WHAT MATERIAL CAN WE USE TO SOLVE QUESTIONS? aniketkarane : Once Handout is done start by solving study material provided by TIME. Once that gets done solve sectional tests starting with easy then moderate and last will be hard level.
harsh : I HAVE REGISTERED ONLINE VIA WEBSITE, SO I DONT KNOW WHO THE CENTRE HEAD IS, WHO I HAVE TO CONTACT FOR LIKE WHATSAPP/TELEGRAM GROUP OR ANY OTHER SUCH ARRANGEMENTS. aniketkarane : If you are an online student drop an email to info@time4education.com they will guide you about your query.
mitusha : LR KA KAISE PAPER KARE aniketkarane : answered already. Get your basics in place and solve a variety of different sets. Solve previous year papers. Try to reduce your solving time as you go. Also content is key in Lrdi. The more diverse and tough questions you solve the better you will get at it. Start by using the material provided by TIME.
arunima : I M READING EDITORIAL AND OPINION PAGE DAILY..THRICE A WEEK, I MANAGE TO READ AN AEON ESSAY TOO...I M TRYING TO FIND IT DIFFICULT TO COMPREHEND CERTAIN ARTICLES.. amitpoddar : Take some doubt classes. Start solving passages from the booklets as well.
arunima : EVEN THOUGH, I MANAGE TO READ EXTERNAL ARTICLES LIKE HINDU AND AEON ESSAYS CONSISTENTLY, I M UNABLE TO MANAGE TIME TO ATTEND THE RC PASSAGES GIVEN IN THE HANDOUTS DAILY AS MY MAJOR TIME GOES FOR QUANT /LRDI..HOW CAN I MANAGE THE TIME amitpoddar : See,you need to take out time for all the sections.Do at least 2 sections per day if you have paucity of time.
arunima : DO YOU SUGGEST REFERRING THE MEANING OF A WORD THAT WE COME ACROSS WHILE READING FREQUENTLY AND NOTING IT DOWN? aniketkarane : While reading try to understand the meaning from the context. After finishing you can note it down and revise the words once a week.
h : HI, FOR RC WE ARE SUGGESTED TO TREAD NEWSPAPERS, ESPECIALLY EDITORIALS, BUT ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC NEWSPAPERS YOU MIGHT SUGGEST (BASED ON THE CONTENT AND THEIR USEFULNESS)? amitpoddar : The Hindu,The Indian Express,ET,Mint,nytimes.com,etc.
cjcbb5a053 : I HAVE LOT OF BACKLOG . INDONT KNOW HOW TO MANAGE ALLNTHE TOPICS amitpoddar : List down all the backlogs and make weekly schedule. Cover 2-3 topics in all the areas per week.Take individual doubt classes regularly.
arunima : IS IT IMPORTANT TO WRITE SUMMARIES EVERYTIME WE READ A PASSSAGE FROM STUDY MATERIAL OR JUST ANSWER TO THE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS? aniketkarane : The exercise where summary writing is given solve those. But every time you solve an RC focus on scribbling the main idea of the para on the rough sheet as that's something you will do at the CAT. Stop underlining the points you feel important jot them down.
cjcbb5a053 : I HAVE LOT OF BACKLOG . I DON'T KNOW HOW TO MANAGE ALL TOPICS WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY DOING WHATS GOING ON IN CLASS. amitpoddar : Follow the booklets chapter-wise and you will get a roadmap on how to complete the whole syllabus.List down all the backlogs and make weekly schedule. Cover 2-3 topics in all the areas per week.Take individual doubt classes regularly.
h : I TRY TO GIVE SECTIONAL TESTS IN VARC, MY ACCURACY IS AT 50 % ON AN AVERAGE. I THINK IT IS BECAUSE I ATTEMPT ALL THE QUESTIONS IN SECTIONALS. SO, SHOULD I ATTEMPT ONLY THOSE WHICH I AM SURE OF? CONFUSED HOW TO GO AHEAD WITH SECTIONAL TESTS ( AS IN WOULD YOU SUGGEST TO ATTEMPT THE QUESTIONS I AM SURE OF AND KEEP A TRACK OF OTHERS, OR SHOULD I ATTEMPT ALL THE QUESTIONS, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE DIFFICULTY LEVEL IS EASY OR MODERATE) gayathri : You need to focus on the accuracy part. Attempting all the questions will not help you to score marks. Practise selecting the moderate and mild difficulty level questions. Use the sectional tests for identifying those questions rather than attempting all.
vanshu : HI SIR I WANTED TO KNOW HOW CAN WE PREPARE FOR VARC AND LRDI IN BETTER WAY TO SCORE 100 PERCENTILE amitpoddar : Follow the 5 steps-Handouts, SM booklets ,sectionals,SAMCATs,AIMCATs. Keep analysis your mocks and keep working on your drawbacks.
arunima : WHILE ATTENDING THE EXAM, HOW CAN WE STRATEGICALLY CHOOSE A PASSAGE TO SOLVE ? IS IT BASED ON OUR COMFORT WITH THE TOPIC, THE PASSAGE LENGTH, THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PASSAGE, THE FIRST COME FIRST BASIS, OR THE QUESTION TYPES? aniketkarane : The selection of passage is key to scoring well. It's always better to solve passages that you are comfortable with. to choose try to look at the questions and decide which one is better for you. trying to figure out from the first para of the passage also works in some cases.
vanshu : I AM NOT ABLE TO CATCHUP CONCEPT FAST. HOW DO I MANAGE ONLY FEW MONTHS ARE LEFT FOR CAT aniketkarane : Practice is the key in your case. Everyone understands at their own pace so don't worry. Just focus on attending all classes, asking and getting doubts cleared. put in a certain amount of time as per your schedule every day for solving and analysis.
arun : IF SOMEONE WHO'S OKAY AT VARC(ENDS UP WITH 20 MARKS) DECIDED TO START FRESH ON THEIR PREP, HOW SHOULD THEY SCHEDULE IT? I AM A IT EMPLOYEE AND WOULD LOVE TO KNOW HOW TO ORGANIZE AND FORMAT MY PREP FOR VARC lakshmymenon : If you're getting about 20 marks , I assume your attempt rate is okay but you need to improve accuracy. Analyse the mistakes in AIMCATs thoroughly - watch the video solutions where the faculty member explains in detail why each option is wrong. Try to understand the flaws in your logic. Work more on question selection- just because you have read an RC passage, do not blindly attempt questions based on it.Take sectional tests and AIMCAT SAs for additional practice. Read a couple of articles daily, and try to cover a wide range of topics.
h : WHEN DO YOU SUGGEST THE NEED TO TAKE UP ONE ON ONE DOUBT SESSION WITH TEACHERS? FOR INSTANCE THE SECTIONAL TEST COULD BE A REFLECTION OF THE PROGRESS BUT IN GENERAL, WHEN WE ARE DOING SOME RC QUESTIONS IN WRONG MANNER ( WHICH CAN BE UNDERSTOOD WHEN THE SOLUTIONS COME, BUT THAT STAND FOR THOSE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS), AS IN GENERAL HOW DO I IDENTIFY THE ARE OF IMPROVEMENT? aniketkarane : Take doubt sessions when you have ample questions to ask the faculty member. If you are taking a one on one doubt session utilize the time well. Try to make a list of questions that you went wrong even though the solution for similar type of question was read before.
bhca5a109 : FOR RC PASSAGES WHAT ALL TOPICS DO THE QUESTIONS USUALLY COME FROM? AND WHERE CAN I READ MORE OF THE SAME TOPICS? lakshmymenon : Topics that have appeared most frequently in the last few years are sociology, cultural history, political science, philosophy, science and technology, psychology, reviews of non-fiction books, linguistics etc. Some excellent sources are Aeon Ideas, Arts & Letters Daily, New York Times (it requires subscription though), Guardian, BBC,National Geographic, IFL science etc.
h : FOR LR I FEEL EACH QUESTION IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT, EVEN IF I TRY TO COVER HO, BOOKLET, STILL I AM NOT ABLE TO ATTEMPT ALL THE QUESTIONS. WHILE SOME SUGGEST TO WAIT AND KEEP TRYING TILL YOU REACH SATURATION AND FEEL YOU CAN ATTEMPT MOST OF THE QUESTIONS, DO YOU SUGGEST SOMETHING ELSE? aniketkarane : At the CAT you only need to solve 2-3 sets accurately so focus on set selection and depending on the difficulty solve as many questions as possible. While practicing try to solve as much variety as possible.
nihar : HELLO FACULTIES I HAD DOUBT REGARDING THE CORRECT METHOD TO SOLVE RC’S . WHAT WOULD BE AN IDEAL WAY TO SOLVE RC’S FAST AND ACCURATE lakshmymenon : The initial reading of a 500 word passage should not take more than 2-3 minutes. Skim through the passage, mentally summing up the central idea of each para as you read. Then, while answering the question, eliminate the obviously wrong options quickly, and then revisit the relevant part of the passage to compare the confusing options. If you're still confused, leave that question (in mocks). Practice reading articles from sources such as Aeon Ideas with a timer set at a reading speed of 200-250 wpm.
nihar : IS THE CHAT WORKING? amitpoddar : yeah.
nih : I ALWAYS STRUGGLE WITH THE “EXCEPT” QUESTION IN RC ANY PARTICULAR STRATEGY THAT WOULD MAKE I EASY lakshmymenon : 'All of the following are true except' = which of the following is false (or irrelevant). 'all of the following strengthen the argument except'= which of the following weakens or is irrelevant. 'None of the following is true except'=Which of the following is true. Try to understand the questions in this manner before answering them.
