Environmental Engineering
Scientists and Environmentalists have estimated a temperature increase of 5 degree Celsius by the end of this century - Year 2100. The reason being Gobal Warming which inturn is caused by Carbon dioxide and other green house gas
emissions. This leads to air pollution. A Major aspect of Environmental
Engineering is to reduce pollution and protect the environment. In keeping the
safety of current and future generations to follow, Environmental Engineering
aims at protecting, preserving and enhancing the environment. It is the
application of science and engineering principles to improve our environment
which includes air, water and land.

We are into the 21st century, yet we are victims to Dengue/Chikunguniya - a disease spread by a mosquito - Aedes aegypti.
Thousands of people were affected and hundreds had to pay their life.
Till now, research is on, to find a suitable vaccine.
The only way to prevent such diseases is to cut down mosquito breeding. Mosquitos breed because of poor sanitation and stagnation of sewage water.
Application of simple and proper Environmetal Engineering practises like waste water management would eradicate mosquito breeding.

A lot of air-borne diseases like Cholera and Malaria have been brought down extremely due to application of Environmental Engineering practices.
Drinking Water Treatment and Sewage Treatment are some of the practical applications of Environmental Engineering.
The DDT introduced after World War II to control pests was one of the giant movement towards modern Enviromental movement and-birth of Environmental Engineering.
Yeilds of crops increased and agriculture benefits were phenomenal reducing world hunger.
National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) -
http://neeri.res.in, Nagpur, setup by The Council of Scientific &
Industrial Research (CSIR) endeavors to provide Leadership in environmental science and engineering for sustainable development.
NEERI dedicates itself in the service of mankind by providing innovative and effective solutions to environmental and natural resource problems.
In India, IIT Kanpur's Civil Engineering Department offers an interdisciplinary
M.Tech program in Environmental Engineering and Management.
Environmental engineering is a synthesis of various disciplines - Civil,Chemical and Mechanical being the major ones.
Environmental Engineers work in industries to make sure pollutants are removed before they reach air and water.
They make sure that solid waste is properly disposed.
Environmental engineers also develop and design equipment to create a cleaner environment.
They conduct research on the environmental impact of proposed construction projects, analyze scientific data, and perform quality-control checks.
They study and attempt to minimize the effects of acid rain, global warming, automobile emissions, and ozone depletion.
All companies that produce a product would need an Environmental Engineer.
For example, in Nuclear plants - finding safe ways to dispose of nuclear materials.
Many environmental engineers work as consultants, helping their clients to comply with regulations and to clean up hazardous sites.
