What is the difference between Brown Electricity and Green Electricity?

  |

Green refers to the electricity
generated from sources like wind, solar etc that do not pollute the
environment. Brown electricity is the term used to the electricity generation
that could have adverse impact on the environment by way of throwing out
pollutants. Electricity generated by burning coal is an example. Electrical
Engineers generally with Commercial and Industrial power requirements.
Management of Power Systems that can supply the electrical supply to large
establishments or townships will be the responsibility of professionals from
this field of Engineering.

The interface between electrical components and electronic componets is a very
vital in todays highly wired world. Designers are building homes that can be
programmed - they are called "smart homes". Imagine - you can switch on the Air
Conditioner in your bedroom through a few keypuches on your mobile as you are
	reaching home from office.

At a very fuctional level, the electrical engineers deal with the production and transmission of power.
In India the main sources of electricity are hydel and thermal. Sunlight and Wind Energy are also tapped to generate commercially viable electricity. Suzlon is a
company that is engaged in wind power generation. There are government
initiatives that focus on using renewable sources for power generation.

Scientists like Ohm, Faraday and Maxwell contributed significantly in the
development of electrical engineering as a proper field of study which during
the earlier years was treated as a sub-section of Physics. Thomas Alva Edision
inaugurated the first commercial distribution of electricity in 1882. The "War
of Currents" followed and Alternating Current established as the preferred mode
of distribution. Today most of the electrical engineering designs are done
through CAD as it has to integrate with the aesthetics of the building
also. Project Managemetn skills is the icing on the cake for electrical
engineering professionals as they will spend less time in actual technical work
as they progress in their career. More time will be spent on preparing project
proposals, appraising proposals, drawing up budgets for large scale projects,
preparing project schedules, working on integrating the electrical engineering
work with the rest - civil, design etc. Electrical Engineers get the
opportunity to interact with scientists, circuit designers, computer
programmers, consultants etc as part of their work.

Of late electrical and mechanical branches of engineering have joined to give
us a branch of study called Mechatronics. These are also called
electromechanical systems and find applications in automated manufacturing
systems, aircrafts, heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems.

The Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineering is the world's
leading professional body linking professionals in this area. This body enjoys
the membership of close to one-third of the professionals world-wide.
