Placement reports of various engineering institutes donot seem to agree with the world view that the economy is slowing down. Organisations from both public and private sectors seem to make a bee line to the engineering institutes looking for talent. The mantra these organisations seem to be following is 'Right man for the Right job'.
Engineering institutes usually have a separate Placement and Training Cell. It goes by the name Training and Placement Office(TPO) or Student Placement Office(SPO). The cell has Dean/Professor as incharge and select students as members. The cell is the interface between industrial establishments/corporate on one hand and students on the other. TPO/SPO invites organisations from various fields for placements. Some of the institutes even conduct preplacement talks for the students to get a preview of what is on offer.
Organisations from diverse fields like Core Engineering services, IT & IT enabled services, manufacturing sector, consultancy, FMCGs, actively participate in the placement process. Fuelled by the rapid strides being witnessed in technology and related fields, several R&D labs are also participating aggressively in the placement process.
PSUs including Navaratna/Maharatna organisations are also seen as preferred destinations of engineers. Some of the students opt out of the placement process and prefer to go on a less beaten paths like - work with NGOs, start their own unit etc.
