Govt rolls back changes to UPSC mains exam
Bowing to the pressure from all sections of society to the English Essay paper in 2013 UPSC Mains, Minister of State for Personnel V Narayanasamy announced in the Lok Sabha that the government has rolled back the changes made to the Mains. As per the announcement,the English essay paper of 100 marks in the Civil Services Main Examination, has been dropped and the earlier practice of two qualifying papers each with 300 marks in any Indian language and English has been restored.
Other conditions that have restored include - the essay paper would now be of 250 marks to be written in the medium or language of the candidate’s choice, the candidates would be allowed to use any one language from the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution or English as the medium of writing the examination, a candidate would be allowed to take up literature as an optional subject “without the conditionality of having to do his/her graduation in that language’s literature.
Aspirants,especially from rural areas, would have heaved a sigh of relief with the roll back since the controversial notification has been widely viewed as being disadvantageous to students with vernacular education back ground

DoPT notifies new UPSC format; weightage on general studies -5th March 2013
As per the notification issued by the Department of Personnel and Training, Civil Services (Mains) Exam will have a new pattern from year 2013 onwards. As per this new pattern, there will be four compulsory General Studies Papers of 250 marks each, in addition to two optional papers of 250 marks each. Earlier, there were two compulsory papers on general studies and two optional papers of 300 marks each. For the first time, the exam will have a separate paper on “ethics, integrity and aptitude”. This paper will include questions to test the candidate’s attitude and approach to various issues faced by him in dealing with the society.
