#### Objectives of our IIT-Foundation Course

To make the students understand and master basic concepts in the subjects of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

To focus on encouraging students to apply the concepts learnt to real-life situations. The programme will encourage school goers to look beyond textbooks for learning.

To help not only to understand better what is taught in regular school classes, but also to develop the acumen which will give them a distinct edge over the rest of their peers. This results in better performance in board or final exams.

To groom students by providing inputs on Reasoning skills, Speed Maths, and Communication Skills.

To help students prepare for various talent search exams like NTSE, NLSTSE, Science Olympiad and Cyber Olympiad.

#### Course Methodology

1. Course methodology is aimed at helping the students understand the concepts thoroughly.
2. It helps them develop a logical approach to Maths, Physics and Chemistry, for an effective learning.
3. It lays stress on application of concepts. What we mean by this can be demonstrated through the following examples :-
1. (Q) How does a kingfisher catch fish?
(A) The kingfisher flies vertically over the position of the fish, and then dives into the water at a 90 Degree angle. The concept here is that the normally incident rays do not undergo refraction, hence the fish lies exactly where it appears to be. At any other angle, the apparent location of the fish would be different from its real location.
2. (Q) Why do we normally swing our arms while walking, and why not when we carry a load in our hands?
(A) The center of gravity of a body depends on the distribution of mass in the body. As we walk, the movement of the legs tends to cause a shift in the centre of gravity. To compensate for this shift we swing our arms. When we are carrying a load in the hands, however, the effective C.G is lower, making it easier to maintain balance.
3. (Q) Why does salt become damp when kept exposed during rainy season and not when kept exposed during summer?
(A) In rainy season humidity in the atmosphere is very high i.e. there is a lot of moisture in the atmosphere. Thus, calcium chloride, an impurity present in the common salt, absorbs this moisture and makes the salt damp. In summer, however, as the temperature is high, calcium chloride tends to lose moisture through the process of evaporation, and the salt is left free-flowing.
4. The syllabus has a comprehensive coverage of Maths, Physics and Chemistry encompassing the syllabi of the major boards (State, CBSE/ICSE). All areas will be covered in full, and not the areas of intersection alone. The whole idea is that a State Board student should be able to answer a CBSE/ICSE question and vice-versa.

#### Class Room Based Inputs

Each topic is dealt with in two modules

• Basic and Exercise Module
• Testing Module

Basic and Exercise Module

The objective of this module is to develop a thorough understanding of the concepts. This is done with the help of our study material. Each chapter has been divided into subtopics to develop an in-depth understanding of each subtopic. In order to develop this level of understanding three exercises are provided for each subtopic as given below.

1. Solved Examples: The faculty member introduces the basic concepts to the students with the help of solved examples that are given in our study material. The faculty member ensures that the concepts are delivered in such a manner that all the students in the class are able to follow the subject. The questions provided in the examples are followed by appropriate solutions. With the help of the given solutions, the student can develop a fair idea as to how to present the solution for a question in the examination.
2. Interactive Exercise: The objective of this exercise is to help the student, with test his comfort levels with fundamentals of the sub topic. Also these questions help in quick review of the concepts learned.
3. Skill-Builder Exercise: This is aimed at reinforcing the concepts learned in the subtopic already discussed. This exercise is designed to help develop Knowledge, Understanding, Application and Analytical skills of a student. The objective of this exercise is to develop clarity in fundamentals and understand the application of concepts.

At the end of each chapter, there is an exercise (Practice Worksheet) which is meant for the home assignment. Students are expected to submit these exercises. The plan for this assignment will be given in the class by the faculty member.

Apart from the above mentioned exercises, there is a collection of questions from all the chapters at the end of each book. These questions are used to develop the Advanced Logical Thinking and Analytical Skills of the students. (ALTAS)

Testing Module

The objective of this module is to test the students' grasp of concepts that have been taught in the class. The basic difference between the exercise module and the testing module is that the exercises would have no time limit, while test papers will have a time limit.

The testing module will include three types of tests

• Topic wise tests
• Cumulative tests
• Model Papers

TOPIC WISE TESTS:

Topic-wise Tests are conducted after completion of each chapter. In each testing class two tests are administered: Test 1 and Test 2.

TEST 1

Test 1 would consist of 15 objective-type questions and will be administered for a 30 minute duration. Questions would be provided in one paper and the responses of the students would be marked separately. The question paper would be retained by the students. The objective of this test is to know the preparedness of the students.

The test will be followed by a discussion of the paper for about 60 minutes. The purpose of the discussion is:

1. As the questions asked in Test 1 would be on the basics and application of the basics, the faculty member would recapitulate what has been taught in the basics and exercise module and thus REINFORCE the students' grasp over the basics.
2. If students have gone wrong they will learn where they went wrong and will try to improve their performance. In the discussion we help the students find where the mistakes were made and this helps them avoid the same in future.

TEST 2

1. 15 objective-type questions are administered for 30 minute duration.
2. Will test the students on aspects similar to the ones discussed in TEST 1.

The questions (or concepts) in Test 2 would be very similar to those covered in Test 1. As Test 2 is conducted after the discussion of Test 1, a student should be able to score more marks. The objective of this test is to check the attentiveness of the students in class.

CUMULATIVE TESTS

Cumulative Tests are descriptive in nature and carry 50 marks. It is further divided into three sections - I, II and III. These tests are conducted once a month. Section I and II tests are modelled on the school/board exams paper pattern. Section III is a combination of school/board exams paper pattern which will require application of concepts too. After completion of two to three chapters one CUMULATIVE TEST will be conducted.

1. Section I consists of Very Short Answers - one word or one sentence answers, multiple choice questions, match the following, fill in the blanks with each question carrying 1 mark
2. Section II consists of Short Answers - three to four sentence answers with each question carrying 2-3 marks
3. Section III consists of Long Answers - The questions are divided into two parts. The first part consists of understanding the concepts and it will carry 2 marks. The second part will consists of application of these concepts and it will carry 3 marks.

MODEL PAPERS

Model Papers will cover all chapters, will have all the three sections and will be descriptive in nature. These papers will be given at the end of the course around January-February. The duration is about 2 hours and will carry approximately 80-100 marks.

#### Video Lectures

As part of our endeavour to constantly provide a student with additional inputs, we are providing video lectures on various subjects. These video lectures are supplementary to the classroom lectures. These are very useful to a student as the student can watch the videos whenever/wherever he/she wants. Video lectures are revision tools prior to exams and assessments. They are useful to revise specific concepts of the chapters to reinforce the understanding of the concepts.

Therefore, we are providing video lectures on some select chapters. These videos will cover a few chapters in each of the subjects such as Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Each chapter is divided into sub-topics. These video lectures include explanation of basic concepts followed by relevant examples wherever necessary. For the convenience of viewing, the lecture on each topic may have been divided into multiple videos of 15-20 min each. This facilitates easy viewing - rather than having to sit at one time to watch a long video or to keep track of where a student has taken a break in a long video.

A student can watch the videos any number of times to revise the basic concepts which reinforce the learning. These videos are made available to classroom program students on the Student Home Page on www.tim4education.com which the students can access after logging in to the Student Home Page.
